“Game Changing” MView Software Wins Award at Digital Construction Awards
MWHT has been recognised at the Digital Construction Awards 2022 in the Digital Innovation in Design category for the submission ‘MView: Visualisation to Optimise Water Treatment Process Design’. The awards took place on July 12th 2022 at a live award ceremony in London.
The Digital Construction Awards are highly respected awards body and celebrate the most pioneering projects, teams, and individuals championing innovation and technology in the built environment and recognise the incredible efforts from across the sector in driving the construction industry forward.
The award was specifically for the Thames Gateway WTW project team’s work in pushing the boundaries of digital engineering to deliver considerable improvement and optimisation works on the UK’s only desalination plant.
SMBJV (Skanska, MWH Treatment & Balfour Beatty) were contracted by Thames Water to work in close collaboration with Mott Macdonald (technical assurance) and Thames Water’s Operational and Engineering teams to make Health and Safety improvements, optimise maintenance procedures and consumable storage, and create further efficiencies across the desalination process as part of a £23M investment.
The desalination process is highly complex compared to a conventional water treatment plant, and limited data on existing assets or operational records were available at the outset. Key challenges included:
- Establishing existing asset data.
- Establishing historic process issues and ensuring common understanding across all stakeholders.
- Agreeing solutions to process problems and conducting design reviews whilst working remotely in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Commissioning the complex works against a challenging programme to meet a regulatory output date.
The digital strategy, established by MWH Treatment, was developed to facilitate a collaborative approach in response to the above challenges, centred around MWH Treatment’s mView software, which was piloted on the project.
The DCA judges were impressed with the submission and the innovative MView software. They described it as “game-changing” and liked that it provides analysis to drive optimal design, but also mitigates health and safety risks.
